In the spring of 1971, local businessman Bobby Eull decided to part with the gravel hauling division of his excavating company. He approached Dennis Fehn with an offer to buy his equipment. Dennis accepted the offer, purchasing a 1965 Dodge tandem axle truck, a 1965 Chevy single axle truck, a 1965 Dodge single axle truck, a 1969 3850 International loader, and a screener from Mr. Eull. Dennis Fehn Sand & Gravel became official in May of 1971.
Dennis immediately began hauling sand out of Becker's pit on State Highway 241 in St. Michael. Seven years later, Dennis started hauling out of Neumann's pit, where PCI's office on 241 is currently located, approximately the same time his oldest son, Mike, began hauling sand & gravel with a tandem axle dump truck for the company at the age of 16. Dennis' youngest son, Gary, also drove a tandem axle dump truck for his father when he reached the age of 16, three years after Mike had started. Prior to the Fehn sons hauling days, they worked in the gravel pit loading trucks, screening sand, and crushing Class 5.
Dennis purchased land south of the Neumann pit in 1980. This property, which now is known as the "Fehn Pit", is where Dennis Fehn Gravel & Excavating, Inc. currently pulverizes black dirt and crushes both Class 5 gravel and recycled products.
Another beginning for the company followed in 1980 when Dennis bought a 1967 D8H Cat Dozer as his first piece of heavy equipment. Dennis Fehn Sand & Gravel originally built rural driveways leading to the company's first official excavating job in 1986, Kings Road, located in Corcoran.
The company became incorporated in 1986 operating as Dennis Fehn Gravel, Inc. A year later the name was changed for the third and final time to Dennis Fehn Gravel & Excavating, Inc.
As the company grew the need for more gravel pits grew. Dennis acquired a pit in Monticello in 1987. The Monticello pit is where we produce our washed, screened, and crushed products.
The company has transformed from Dennis Fehn Sand & Gravel with one employee in 1971 to Dennis Fehn Gravel & Excavating, Inc. with over 75 employees during the construction season. Dennis Fehn Gravel & Excavating, Inc. has grown wisely over the years with the intention of providing quality service at a fair price for generations to come.
